Acceptance of Stereotypes
Tuesday, June 27, 2017 | 0 comments
Assalamualaikum and good evening to all!

Today, I'm going to talk on acceptance of stereotyping. Alright, let me start this post with the definition of stereotyping.

According to Cambridge Dictionary (n.d.), stereotype refers to an idea that people have about something or someone, especially an idea that is wrong.

It seems that stereotypes are often to be associated with representing bad stuffs about something or someone, but is that it? Have you ever wondered if stereotypes can represent good things or not?

In a way, yes, stereotypes can promote positive values about someone or something. For instance, there is a stereotype that says women have more patience than men. However, this also seems to validate thinking about others in terms of sex and to promote gender inequality. Lombrozo (2015) asserts that positive stereotypes can have some positive effects but when it comes to interpersonal and group interactions, the effects are predominantly negative.

There lies the question: should we accept stereotypes?

As human beings, we live in a world that is full with ideas. Different people have different ideas about anything. There are things about stereotypes that aren't necessarily right. Thus, I believe we should accept good things and do not follow bad things. It doesn't make sense, but there's a reason why we have to avoid stereotypes.

It generalizes people and it separates people from each other. The unity will not be seen if we keep on stereotyping.

That's all for you to consider. I'll leave the question for you to answer.

I guess that's all for today. See you later, everyone!

Much love,
Farzana
